Owings leads D'Backs vs. Rockies

Baseball Betting Lines

05/14/2008 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Arizona's Micah Owings will try to get back in the win column tonight, when the Diamondbacks play the second test of a three-game series with the Colorado Rockies at Chase Field.

Owings won his first four starts of the season, starting that run with a win over Colorado, but has gone 0-1 in three starts since with a 7.13 earned run average. He was better last time out, getting a no-decision against Philadelphia on May 7 after giving up three runs on four hits with seven strikeouts.

The right-hander defeated Colorado on April 4 in his first-ever start against the Rockies, giving up just a run -- a solo homer by Todd Helton -- on two hits in 6 2/3 innings while striking out a season-high nine batters.

Matt Holliday struck out all three times he faced Owings on that day, but is still a lifetime .314 hitter against Arizona with six homers and 40 RBI in 61 games. Last year's runner-up to the National League MVP has a hit in eight of his last nine games, batting .400 (14-for-35) in that span with two homers and five RBI.

Holliday had two hits in Tuesday's opener, an 8-4 victory for Arizona.

Stephen Drew clubbed a three-run homer to help Arizona snap a three-game skid. Orlando Hudson went 2-for-4, knocked in two runs and scored once, while Conor Jackson, Mark Reynolds and Chris Burke had an RBI apiece in the win.

Randy Johnson (3-1) got the win despite giving up four runs on nine hits in five innings. The Arizona bullpen pitched four frames of three-hit ball, as the club upped its lead in the NL West to 4 1/2 games over Los Angeles.

Garrett Atkins went 2-for-5 with a solo homer for the Rockies, who have dropped three contests in a row. Ryan Spilborghs had two doubles and also scored, while Jeff Baker knocked in a pair of runs.

Jeff Francis (0-4) took the loss after he was roughed up for eight runs on 13 hits in just 4 2/3 innings of work.

Colorado has lost nine of its last 11 on the road, giving it an 8-14 mark as the guest this year. The Rockies are hitting just .245 away from home this year.

Jorge De La Rosa will try to duplicate the success of his second start of the season tonight for Colorado. De La Rosa joined the Rockies' starting rotation on May 3 after being acquired from Kansas City, and was promptly lit up for nine runs on nine hits and three walks over just four innings of his season debut versus the Dodgers.

However, the left-hander made a bid to stay in Colorado's struggling rotation on Thursday after limiting the Cardinals to a pair of runs and five hits over 5 2/3 innings of a 9-3 victory. He also struck out five.

De La Rosa has faced the Diamondbacks four times in his career, and has given up six runs in 9 2/3 innings without getting a decision. However, just one of those runs were earned. The lefty hasn't faced them as a starter since 2004 while with Milwaukee, and he gave up five runs (1 earned) in six innings of work.

Arizona lost 10 of 18 to Colorado last year and was swept by the Rockies in the NLCS, but has claimed victory in six of seven matchups so far this season.

MySportsbook.com and Kentucky Derby Offer Bonuses
The 2008 Kentucky Derby has announced a $1-million bonus for this weekend’s 134th ‘Run for the Roses’ and MySportsbook.com is doing the same.

Well, not quite $1 million, but MySportsbook.com is offering a 75% rebate for Kentucky Derby lines. Check out the exclusive horse racing bonus for all the details.

According to MySportsbook.com, the favorites for Saturday’s Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky are: Curlin (+250); Street Sense (+500); Scat Daddy (+700); Circular Quay (+750); and Nobiz Like Shobiz (+800).

Derby organizers announced this week that there will be a $1-million bonus at the 2007 Kentucky Derby odds if the first-place horse wins by more than 6 1/2 lengths – the margin of Barbaro's victory last year. The bonus would be divided Saturday among the winning trainer, jockey, owner and a charity, with each receiving 25 percent. The designated charity is the Barbaro Memorial Fund.

''It's certainly creative, it's certainly fun and it has something for the horsemen, which we always want to embrace,'' Churchill Downs president and chief executive Robert Evans said at a news conference. ''What's really cool is it will force us to remember Barbaro.''

Meanwhile, the Derby favorite – Curlin – is going against the odds this year. It's been 125 years since Apollo won after skipping his 2-year-old season, and not since Regret in 1915 has such a lightly seasoned horse worn the blanket of red roses.

Arkansas Derby winner Curlin – unbeaten in three career races – tries to overcome both those obstacles in Saturday's 133rd Derby.

''We're not running against history,'' trainer Steve Asmussen said Monday. ''We're running against who they load up.''

Six other horses have run in the Derby without benefit of 2-year-old races and with three or fewer starts. The best any of them managed was a sixth-place finish by Showing Up last year.

Asmussen dismissed suggestions that Curlin's lack of racing experience could keep him from the winner's circle.

”He exudes confidence and he's got a great presence about him,'' the trainer said. ''I feel great about the position we're in. He's not worried about anything, why should you be?''

The Kentucky Derby is at 4:04 p.m., ET Saturday.
