12/29/2006 - Oklahoma City, OK (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - New Orleans/Oklahoma City Hornets guard Chris Paul is expected to be sidelined for at least four weeks because of a sprained right ankle.
Paul was hurt during Tuesday's game against Seattle and underwent an MRI exam on Thursday that revealed the severity of the sprain.
The injury occurred when Paul stepped on the foot of Sonics forward Johan Petro during a Hornets fast break. Paul hopped on one leg through the lane before collapsing to the floor in agony. After laying on the court for several minutes being worked on by team medical personnel, he was helped to the locker room.
Paul, the 2005-2006 Rookie of the Year, is the Hornets' leader with 18.9 points and nine assists per game. He has put together 13 double-doubles on the season, including five in his last seven games. He had six points and seven assists Tuesday before departing the Hornets' 102-94 loss in Seattle.
"The injury to Chris is unfortunate, especially in light of the fact that we've been without three of our top players in Peja Stojakovic, David West and Bobby Jackson for an extended period," said Hornets general manager Jeff Bower in a release.
"But despite our injury troubles, credit is due to coach [Byron] Scott and our players for the resiliency and toughness they've shown through this stretch."
Stojakovic has missed 15 games because of back surgery, West has been sidelined for 21 games with a right elbow problem and Jackson has sat out 13 games because of a cracked left rib.
The Hornets hope to have Jackson back in the lineup in the next two weeks, but Stojakovic and West are out indefinitely.
