08/12/2008 - Pittsburgh, PA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Brandon Phillips belted a two-run homer to lift the Cincinnati Reds over the Pittsburgh Pirates, 5-1, in the first contest of a three-game set at PNC Park.
Javier Valentin added a solo shot for the Reds, who began life without Adam Dunn. The Reds continued their youth movement on Monday, shipping Dunn to the Arizona Diamondbacks for three prospects, including minor league pitcher Dallas Buck.
Corey Patterson drove in two runs on two hits as the Reds halted a season- high six-game slide.
Andy LaRoche drove in the only run for the Pirates, who have dropped three of their last four.
Edinson Volquez (14-5) picked up the win after yielding one run on five hits and three walks in 6 2/3 innings. Volquez had five strikeouts along the way.
Jeff Karstens (2-1) suffered his first defeat as he surrendered four runs, one of which was unearned, in seven innings. In his third career National League start, the 2003 Yankees' draft choice allowed seven hits and two walks, while striking out two.
The Reds opened up the scoring with two runs in the first and they led the rest of the way. Phillips got the big hit with his 18th homer of the season, a two-run shot to left that also plated Chris Dickerson.
Dickerson went 1-for-4 with a walk in his major league debut after he was called up earlier in the day from Triple-A Louisville to fill the roster spot held by Dunn.
With one out and the bases empty in the fourth, Cincinnati pushed its edge to 3-0 when Valentin hit his second homer of the year to center.
Pittsburgh got on the board in the home fourth as Doug Mientkiewicz drew a leadoff walk, moved to second on a groundout by Ryan Doumit and crossed the plate via a double to left-center by LaRoche.
However, in the sixth the Reds got that run back to make it a 4-1 affair, thanks to a costly Pittsburgh error. With one out and the bases empty, Phillips reached first when LaRoche couldn't field a ball hit to third. Three batters later, Phillips scored on an RBI single by Patterson.
The Reds capped off the scoring in the eighth with an RBI double by Patterson. Edwin Encarnacion came home on the hit to right after he drew a two-out walk.
