Ramirez aims to extend hot play, as Dodgers play host to Phils

Baseball Betting Lines

08/13/2008 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Manny Ramirez has been like a gift from heaven so far for the Los Angeles Dodgers, who will try to stay on the winning track in the third installment of a four-game series versus the Philadelphia Phillies at Chavez Ravine.

The slugging Ramirez has played 11 games with the Dodgers since a three-team trade with Boston and Pittsburgh, and has yet to disappoint in the City of Angels. Ramirez is hitting .476 with four homers and 14 RBI in Dodger blue, and drove in a run to help LA to a 4-3 victory on Tuesday. Andre Ethier, though, delivered the blow to the Phillies with a game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning.

Matt Kemp finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored and Casey Blake drove in a pair of runs in the win. The Dodgers remained one game behind Arizona in the NL West division after the Diamondbacks topped Colorado. Dodgers shortstop Nomar Garciaparra returned to the lineup and finished 0-for-3 with a walk. In order to make room for Garciaparra on the roster, slumping outfielder Andruw Jones was placed on the disabled list with a left knee injury.

Brad Penny will make his second start for the Dodgers on Wednesday since a near two-month layoff because of tendinitis in his right throwing shoulder. Penny made his first start since June 14 on Friday at San Francisco, pitching five decent innings of one-run ball in a 6-2 victory.

Penny ended a five-start losing streak and had been 0-7 in his previous eight starts before downing the Giants at AT&T Park. The two-time All-Star is 6-9 with a 5.66 earned run average in 16 starts this season.

The righty will make his 20th career start versus the Phillies tonight, as he sports an 8-4 record and a 3.33 ERA in 19 career appearances against them.

Philadelphia is losing grip on its lead in the National League East division, and sits just a game ahead of the New York Mets and 1 1/2 games in front of the Florida Marlins in the standings. It suffered its second straight loss and fourth in six tries after last night's breakdown at Chavez Ravine.

Usually-reliable reliever J.C. Romero was saddled with the loss after giving up Ethier's game-winning hit in the home ninth. Struggling starter Cole Hamels did not factor in the outcome after allowing two runs on five hits with seven strikeouts and two walks over seven frames. Hamels hasn't won in seven starts -- the longest streak of his career -- and added an RBI single at the plate.

NL MVP candidate Chase Utley homered and Pat Burrell drove in a run for the Phillies, who are 0-2 so far on a seven-game swing through Los Angeles and San Diego. Philadelphia is 32-28 away from Citizens Bank Park this season.

Right-hander Joe Blanton makes his fifth start for his new ballclub on Wednesday, and is 1-0 with a 3.27 earned run average in four starts for the Phils. Blanton, acquired from Oakland last month, did not factor in a 2-0 loss versus Pittsburgh the previous time out on Friday despite an excellent showing. He hurled seven shutout innings and allowed one hit with seven strikeouts against the Pirates, just six days after his first win as a Phillie against St. Louis.

The bulky right-hander faced the Dodgers just once in his career back on June 18, 2006 as a member of the Athletics. In the 5-2 triumph over Los Angeles at McAfee Coliseum, Blanton gave up just two runs on nine hits over eight innings.

Los Angeles and Philadelphia are squaring off for the first time since the Dodgers won four of six games last season.

MySportsbook.com: NBA Championship Odds

With the playoffs about two months away, the top two teams in the Western Conference are the clear cut leaders to win the NBA Championship. The Dallas Mavericks have the best record in the NBA (44-9) and have been absolutely scorching since the second week of the season.  What makes the Mavs’ record more impressive is the fact that they dropped their first four games of the season.  Currently they have won 17 out of their last 18 and are MySportsbook.com’s favorite (2-1) to win it all.  Right behind the Mavs are the Pacific leading Phoenix Suns (39-13).  Last season, the Suns lost in the Conference Finals to non-other then the Mavericks four games to two.  Of course the Suns were without center Amare Stoudemire who has is averaging 19.9 PPG and 9.5 RPG since coming back from his knee injury.  Unlike the Mavs, the Suns have struggled a bit lately having lost their last three and four out of their last seven.  Of course the main reason for their three straight loses is due to the absence of two time MVP Steve Nash, who is out with a shoulder injury.  Heads-up, the Mavs have beaten the Suns in both of their meetings this season.

In the Eastern Conference, the Pistons (32-19) are the favorites to win it all at 6-1. The addition of Chris Webber seems to have been a good move for the Pistons.  Since coming over from the 76ers, Webber has averaged 13.1 PPG and 7.3 RPG and the Pistons are 11-4.  Even though the defending champion Heat are currently on the playoff making cusp, they are the Eastern Conference team that is getting the most action to win it all (9-1).  The fact that Shaquille O’Neal is back in the starting lineup after missing 39 games probably has something to do with this.  No doubt, Shaq makes a difference when in the lineup as their winning six out of their last seven would indicate.
