08/26/2008 - San Jose, CA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The legal team for all-time home run king Barry Bonds is reportedly seeking dismissal of the majority of charges in the indictment against him.
According to the San Jose Mercury News, papers were filed in court Monday arguing that 10 of the 15 charges are legally flawed enough to be thrown out.
Federal prosecutors filed a revised indictment in May, which charged Bonds with 14 counts of lying to a grand jury -- during testimony given under oath in December 2003 -- and one count of obstruction that he denied knowingly taking illegal performance-enhancing drugs.
Bonds pleaded not guilty, and in this most recent filing, Bonds' lawyers argue that many of the charges are too vague. Earlier this year, Bonds' lawyers claimed that the original indictment was too vague and sought its dismissal.
Federal prosecutors originally hit Bonds with just a five-count indictment -- four counts of perjury and one for obstruction of justice. But in March, U.S. District Judge Susan Illston delayed the case so the lawyers could correct technical flaws, and the prosecutors came back with the 15-count indictment.
The newspaper stated federal prosecutors are not expected to respond until next month, and the trial date is scheduled to take place in March 2009.
A seven-time MVP, eight-time Gold Glove winner, 14-time All-Star and two-time batting champion, Bonds owns seven single-season major league records, most notably a 73-home run season in 2001 with the Giants.
Bonds, who is a free agent, finished last season with 762 career home runs, with a career average of .298 in 22 seasons with Pittsburgh and San Francisco. He was released by the Giants during the offseason.
