Webb shoots for 20th win as Diamondbacks resume set with Padres

08/26/2008 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Brandon Webb tries to become the National League's first 20-game winner since 2005 this evening when the Arizona Diamondbacks play the second test of their three-game series with the San Diego Padres at Petco Park.

Webb, the NL's Cy Young Award winner in 2006, moved one step closer to joining Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling as the only D'Backs hurlers to reach the 20- win mark on Thursday, as he won his sixth straight start and eighth consecutive decision with a brilliant effort against the Padres. He scattered three hits over seven scoreless innings to improve to 19-4, while lowering his earned run average to 2.74.

The National League hasn't had a 20-game winner since Dontrelle Willis won 22 for the Florida Marlins in 2005.

Webb has already beaten San Diego twice this season, but is just 6-7 lifetime against them with a 3.42 ERA in 21 starts.

San Diego drew first blood in this series on Monday with a thrilling win, as Jody Gerut hit a game-ending two-run home run to lift the Padres to a 4-2 win.

The game had been tied since the end of the fourth inning, and Arizona's Jon Rauch came on to pitch in the bottom of the ninth. Rauch struck out pinch- hitter Scott Hairston for the first out. Brian Giles next came up and was safe at first after the throw on his grounder sailed past the bag. However, he tried to move up to second and was tagged out after the ball bounced back toward the field to make the relay throw easier.

After that play, Rauch looked like he might end the inning and send the game to extras, but Luis Rodriguez singled ahead of Gerut. Rauch threw a slider slightly inside that hung up, and Gerut stayed inside the pitch to hammer it deep over the right field fence to give the Padres the win.

The homer made a winner out of Trevor Hoffman (2-6), who threw a scoreless top of the ninth inning, while Rauch (4-5) took the loss.

Giles and Rodriguez each had three hits and a run batted in, while Rodriguez's tally included a double and triple. Jake Peavy was solid in six innings, but took the no-decision. He gave up just two runs on four hits and two walks, while striking out seven for San Diego, which snapped a seven-game slide.

Diamondbacks starter Dan Haren gave up two runs on nine hits and a walk in seven frames, and struck out a season-high 11, but didn't factor into the decision.

Chris Snyder finished 1-for-4 and drove in both the runs for Arizona, which maintained its three-game lead over Los Angeles atop the NL West. The Dodgers lost to Philadelphia earlier on Monday.

Getting the call for the Padres tonight will be Chad Reineke, who is 1-1 with a 4.91 ERA. Reineke, in just his third big league start, was handed the first loss of his young career on Thursday at the hands of Webb and the D'Backs, who managed three runs and five hits off of the 26-year-old righty in six innings.

Reineke had beaten the Phillies in his debut, surrendering three runs and five hits in five frames.

Arizona swept a three-game series from the Padres last week and has won five of the last six against them. The D'Backs hold a 10-6 edge in the season series, with four of those victories coming in San Diego.
